Period 5

In the movie, Bicentennial Man, a robot named Andrew is bought buy a family. We know that he failed the turing test because he didn’t understand when Sir asked him to go to the kitchen He then falls out of a window and begins to become intelligent. The movie first feels like Andrew isn’t a human because he doesn’t know emotions or feelings, but eventually the movie shows that Andrew is capable of showing these things. I think Andrew is intelligent like humans because he starts to have feelings, physically and emotionally. Andrew starts to have creativity when he made Little Miss the wooden horse and his want for friendship. He also begins to feel pain and sorrow when Little Miss dies and starts to love when he meets Porche. Andrew is intelligent because he learns from his mistakes and begins to have human qualities.

During the first part of the movie, Andrew accidentally cut his finger off and needs to get it replaced. Dennis feels that Andrew should be considered as a kitchen appliance and should be fixed because if more robots become intelligent, the human race would become obsolete. The movie thinks that Andrew should be considered alive because throughout the movie, Andrew is on a journey to become human. I think robots should be considered alive because they would have more rights as opposed to other appliances

Towards the middle of the movie, Andrew finally realizes that he wants to be free to do things on his own. Sir doesn’t like the idea at first, but eventually gives in to Andrew. The movie feels that robots should be allowed to make their own choices because they show Andrew doing this. I feel that robots should be allowed to make their own decisions, so long as they still follow the three laws of robotics. If they don’t harm or conflict with humans, they should be allowed to do whatever they please because it isn’t affecting anyone but themselves.

Andrew grows old and finds that Little Miss has a grand-daughter named Porche. They eventually fall in love with each other and they want to get married. The film is optimistic about the idea in the end because they officially consider Andrew a human and pronounce him and Porche man and wife. I believe that robots should be allowed to marry humans because I don’t feel like it would personally conflict with my life. If a human wants to marry a robot, they should be allowed because it doesn’t do anything to anybody. I think people should allow it because it shouldn’t be up to them about who gets married to who.

Throughout the movie, Andrew builds up a want to be considered human. When he first tries to become human, they reject him because they feel that an immortal human would cause big problems for the human race. He then decides to weaken his body so he would no longer be immortal and they finally decide to officially pronounce Andrew a human. This shows that the movie believes that true AI should be considered human. I would also agree to this. I feel this because if they are true AI, they are basically human and it is nothing more than a label. I don’t feel like the title of a human could really change how robots are.

The movie thinks that AI will be a good thing for humanity because they make humans have the ability to become immortal and they build organs for humans so they can survive. I personally believe that AI would be a bad thing for humanity because we would no longer be needed. Humans would no longer have a purpose in life if we have robots doing everything for us. We would also have to compete with the robots and eventually they would take over. The result of AI, would most likely be more like Flatline in my opinion.
